Produz-se vapor a alta press\u00e3o que \u00e9 ent\u00e3o canalizado atrav\u00e9s da v\u00e1lvula para um pist\u00e3o hermeticamente fechado dentro de uma c\u00e2mara (1). A press\u00e3o empurra o pist\u00e3o para fora, que por sua vez \u00e9 conectado a um mecanismo que converte o movimento linear em movimento circular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conforme o g\u00e1s se expande, perde energia cin\u00e9tica e condensa-se em \u00e1gua (ou apenas vapor mais frio), reduzindo a press\u00e3o dentro da c\u00e2mara (2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O pist\u00e3o \u00e9 impulsionado para tr\u00e1s pela a\u00e7\u00e3o combinada da redu\u00e7\u00e3o da press\u00e3o na c\u00e2mara e da in\u00e9rcia do mecanismo em movimento.
