Differential Kit

The differential is used in cars to allow wheels to turn at different speeds while allowing power to be transferred to both wheels. The other function is to turn the power flow direction by 90 degrees.

The differential kit is a stylized teaching model, an interactive study guide to the mechanism designed just for understanding the mechanism’s basics and functioning principles.

Components:

  • The drive gear
  • The locking lever
  • The side gear
  • The locking clutch
  • The wheel

Working Principle:

The Differential was created to ensure that the driving wheels on the same axle revolve at different rates and cover separate distances. This device allows the car to perform turns without the wheels skidding, prevents wheel-slip, minimises tyre wear, and allows the driver to enter and exit turns more easily. After assembling the Differential kit, push the lever to position 1 (Up) to unblock it and rotate the drive gear or the wheel to set both wheels in motion.

By turning the Control lever to the left or right you can control the locking of the left and right wheels. Both wheels are coupled in a rigid coupling in the “down” position of the lever, and they can either rotate together (driven by the driving gear or a wheel) or lock simultaneously (by the lever of the wheel).

When and by whom was it created?

In 1825, French engineer Onesiphore Pecqueur devised the vehicle differential. Ferdinand Porsche, a German automotive engineer, improved the technology significantly in the 1930s of the twentieth century.

Usage

Differentials are mostly employed in automobiles as part of the transmission system. They improve a car’s manoeuvrability and performance.

Instructions:

  1. Push the lever in position 1 (Up) and set both wheels in motion by rotation the drive gear or the wheel.
  2. Use the control lever to lock the left and right wheels independently by turning left or right respectively.
  3. Push the lever in position 2 (Down) to lock the wheels.
