Plasma Ball

Plasma is the most common form of matter in the universe. Plasma is the 4th state of matter together with solids, liquids and gases. It is comprised of equal quantities of positive and negative charges.

Components:

  • Glass ball: container for the gas in partial vacuum
  • Power supply: alternating voltage of about 2-5 KV at a frequency of about 30 kHz
  • Gas: inert gas such as neon or argon
  • Tesla coil: miniature Tesla coil

Working Principle:

When power is supplied to the miniature tesla coil in the middle, it creates an electrical field. The electrode is negatively charged and releases electrons to the noble gas in the glass ball. The partial vacuum just makes it easier to see the electrical sparks. When you touch the plasma ball the electrons escape through your body to the ground. You can see a spark where you put your finger.

The colour you see depends on the gas. Some common gases used are:

  • neon
  • helium
  • argon
  • krypton
  • xenon
  • various mixtures

Instructions:

  1. Power up the plasma ball
  2. Place your finger on the ball to see the electrical sparks
  3. Try holding a fluorescent bulb next to the plasma ball and see what happens…
  4. Switch the power button to AUDIO and clap your hands
